Bill Wright is a Texas photographer who has been featured in many one-man exhibitions and numerous group shows. He has organized reciprocal photographic exhibitions between Texas photographers and photographers from Scotland, Peru, Czechoslovakia, and the former Soviet Union. Mr. Wright is currently a commissioner for the Texas Commission on the Arts, is past Chairman of the Historic Photography Committee of the Texas Historical Foundation, and he organized Historic Texas and Contemporary Texas, two books of photographs published by The Texas Monthly Press, and The Union Guide to Texas Photographic Collections, published by the Texas A & M University Press. In addition, he has published four books. Two of these, The Tigua: Pueblo Indians of Texas, winner of the Border Book Award, and The Kickapoo: Keepers of Tradition, are a series on Texas tribes, published by the Texas Western Press of the University of Texas at El Paso. Portraits from the Desert: Bill Wright’s Big Bend, released by the University of Texas Press in Austin in February of 1998, is a collection of photographs and essays on the Big Bend of Texas. His fourth book, People’s Lives: A Celebration of the Human Spirit, was released from the University of Texas Press in the spring of 2001. The Texas A&M University Press will release his fifth book, The Last of the Last Frontier, a collaboration with photographer June Van Cleef, in the spring of 2004.
Mr. Wright has work in public and private collections including the British Library in London; the National Museum of American Art in Washington; the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, University of Texas at Austin; Rockwell Museum in Corning in New York; Institute of Texan Culture in San Antonio; Princeton Collections of Western Americana in Princeton, New Jersey; Umeleckoprumyslove Museum in Prague, Czechoslovakia; Amon Carter Museum in Ft. Worth; Smithsonian Institute in Washington; the Southwest Writer’s Collection at San Marcos, The Museum of New Mexico, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston.
